Congress President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi while participating in the discussion to commemorate the 60th anniversary of India's first Parliamentary session said that the weakest of the society should have the same opportunity as the strongest.

Remembering Gandhi Ji Sonia Gandhi added "My notion of democracy", said Gandhiji, the Father of our nation and the leader of our freedom struggle, "is that under it the weakest should have the same opportunity as the strongest."

The Congress President also argued that it was this revolutionary idea that opened the doors of our legislatures to them and began to transform the Indian state and society. “It has done so in a peaceful and evolutionary manner, founded on the time-tested principles of secularism and social justice,” added the Congress MP.

Sonia Gandhi said that we could say with pride that India’s parliament, elected by the largest electorate in the world and reflecting the aspirations of some 1.2 billion people, has grown into a great representative political institution.

Sonia Gandhi then p[aid homage to great National leaders who played crucial roles in the freedom movement and said “I pay my deepest tribute to the Mahatma. He was no longer living when this House first met, yet he was the guiding light that made it all possible. Leading a life of spartan simplicity he dedicated himself to the last and the least. He taught us the power of love and compassion”.

Sonia Gandhi visits flood-affected areas in Assam

Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh visited the flood hit state of Assam on Monday. Both Sonia Gandhi and Dr Singh made an aerial survey by helicopter of Majuli island, Jorhat, Sibsagar, Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts, which were among the worst-affected in the floods.
They also are set to survey the Kaziranga National Park, which has been completely submerged by flood waters. Earlier, the PM and Sonia Gandhi reached Jorhat’s Rowriah airport from New Delhi by a special flight at around 11:00 a.m.

Sonia Gandhi had said ‘my target is not the Prime Ministership’

While taking part in the debate organized on the occasion of the celebration of the 60^th year of Parliament, Congress President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi said that while Parliament’s integrity and independence must be preserved at all cost, it must not only be a source of law and power but also justice and compassion. Sonia Gandhi underlined that that the greatest triumph of the country in the last sixty years is that the aam aadmi became the heart and soul of Indian democracy.

“The poor and illiterate masses have again and again voted with wisdom, they have voted with purpose, sometimes reaffirming their faith in those who govern them, sometimes voting them out, said the Congress MP"

Noting that India's freedom struggle reinvented the idea of democracy, the Congress President said, "If there is one thread running through these past six decades, it is that people's power is felt constantly at the highest levels of governance."

Sonia Gandhi added that Indian social legislations have emerged as a global benchmark today and the laws enacted in last sixty years have especially protected the excluded and the marginalized. "My notion of democracy is that under it the weakest should have the same opportunity as the strongest," said Sonia Gandhi recalling the words of Mahatma Gandhi.

The Congress MP from Raebareli also paid homage to the security personnel, who sacrificed their life in 2001 when Parliament had come under a terrorist attack.

Rahul Gandhi to visit Himachal Pradesh next week

The visit of Rahul Gandhi ahead of assembly elections is being seen as a step to boost the Congress workers in the state and also to bridge the divide among top leaders. Factionalism within Congress is posing question mark over party’s sincere attempts to reclaim the power in the coming elections.
Rahul Gandhi will reach Kullu on June 27 and hold discussions with Congress workers and then he will visit Shimla on June 28 to participate in another meeting of the party workers.
