Latest news - Respect for women is the basic preamble for social reform: Sonia Gandhi

Paying rich tributes to legendary linguist, laureate and social reformer Acharya Mahavir Prasad Dwivedi, Smt. Sonia Gandhi said that respect for women is the basic imperative for social reform in any society. She added that she was very pleasantly impressed to see that the statue of Dwivediji’s wife was placed between the statues of Goddess Saraswati and Lakshmi in their private temple.This gesture truly captured the ideology of the great social reformer – Acharya Dwivedi.

Congress President was addressing a function today at Daulatpur, the birthplace of Acharya Mahavir Prasad Dwivedi in Rae Bareli after unveiling a statue of the great scholar and social reformer.

Smt. Sonia Gandhi paid rich tributes to Rae Bareli and said that people from Rae Bareli had played stellar role in the freedom movement since 1857 and also contributed significantly to social activism and literature.

Known popularly as the Yug Purush of Hindi literature, Acharya Dwivedi also belonged to Daulatput in Rae Bareli. Smt. Gandhi stated that Acharya Mahavir Prasad Dwivedi laid the foundations of modern Hindi which is popularly in prevalence today. His rich literary outputs in the form of creations like Vichar Vimarsh, Sahitya Sandarbh, or the intellectual pursuits undertaken in the magazine – Saraswati are still as relevant as they were 100 years ago, Smt. Gandhi said. She added that Acharyaji’s ornate works like Kavya Manjusha, Suman and translations of Kumar Sambhav and Meghdoot are eternal works that have significantly influenced and guided modern Hindi literature and language. Smt. Gandhi said that though semantic changes in languages are inevitable but it is necessary to maintain the basic principles of any language because apart from being a mode of communication, language also reflects the moral values of any society.

Congress President pointed out that Acharya Dwivedi was also a great social reformer and fought against social evils like caste system and other hypocritical social practices. He also was a great advocate of women empowerment and worked tirelessly for ensuring better position for women in the society. Smt. Sonia Gandhi said that the life and ideology of Acharya Dwivedi was a great lesson for today’s youth who should learn how to fight against all odds to reach the final goal.
