Launching scathing attack on UP Chief Minister Mayawati for indulging in caste politics for remaining in power, Congress (I) General Secretary Rahul Gandhi has said she has done noting for improving the conditions of the dalits and poor except to keep them on occasional state doles. Congress (I)-led UPA government at the Centre has been sending various development schemes which are oriented towards building capacity among poor so that they can earn their own livelihood and live a respectable life. Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) – one such scheme – provides guaranteed employment to rural poor for a minimum of 100 days in a year in their own villages at the rate Rs 120 per day. But the funds of crores of rupees meant for did not reach the poor. The money went into the pockets of ministers. The poor were deprived of their rights under the MNREGA scheme. Thus, caste based politics of Mayawati is benefiting her, not dalits, said Rahul Gandhi.
