Coming down heavily on BJP for misleading the people with ‘India shining’ slogan, in 2004, Congress (I) General Secretary Rahul Gandhi has said BJP befooled the people with false slogan. The people rejected the slogan as well as BJP, he said while campaigning for UP Assembly elections 2012. He asked the audience “Did your village shine. Did your state shine?” Taking a dig at BJP he said during BJP-led NDA regime India was shining only for BJP leaders who were indulging in scams and making money; it was shining for the elite of the society but not for the common people. Rahul Gandhi pointed to the audience, “They can give this slogan as their leaders do not visit your houses, don’t eat food with you, drink water of your wells. They do not know the real plight of the people” and added that though the country has made progress, it is not shining in villages and small towns. He said, “India will shine only when no poor person is left in the country.” Referring to corruption in Mayawati government, Rahul Gandhi said her BSP elephant eats up all the money of the poor sent by center for implementing welfare schemes for them. Urging the people to bring an end of the corruption Rahul Gandhi requested them to vote for Congress (I) and assured that it will provide corruption-free, transparent, responsive, progressive and development oriented government.
