Lashing out at UP Chief Minister for adopting anti-farmers policies, Congress (I) General Secretary Rahul Gandhi has said Mayawati has compounded misery of farmers by her hostile attitude towards them. In Bhatta-parsol and Thappal when farmers demanded fair compensation for their land acquired by the government, Mayawati government fired bullets at them and destroyed their property. In eastern UP industrial pollution in rivers is contaminating irrigation sources used by farmers for agriculture and drinking water but Mayawati does not care a bit. Citing an example of the poor state of governance in UP, Rahul Gandhi said, “In a village, I visited recently, I found 500 farmers waiting in queue for fertiliser. They were told there was no fertiliser, yet when I went inside I saw piles of sacks containing fertiliser. The farmers were being denied because the fertiliser found its way to the black market under the cover of darkness.” Farmers are determined to out Mayawati this time, said Rahul Gandhi.
