Blaming Mayawati for MNREGA scam in the state, Congress (I) has said it was the result of rampant corruption in her government and her failure to manage the administration. Congress (I)-led UPA government launched Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) for providing guaranteed employment for minimum 100 days. The scheme puts money directly in the pocket of poor people, said Congress (I). While it is a tremendous success in Congress (I) ruled states, Mayawati government stole MNREGA funds instead of spending on giving employment the poor. Seventeen Rural Development officers have been charge-sheeted for financial irregularities in MNREGA funds. District officer has passed orders for recovery of embezzled amount from those officials. Five village pradhans are facing charges for misappropriation of MNREGA money. MNREGA scam confirms that Mayawati is really not interested in welfare of dalits, said Congress (I).
