The Congress Legislature Party on Monday passed a resolution authorising party president Sonia Gandhi to elect its leader. The meeting of the new MLAs held in Lucknow passed a one-line resolution authorising the Congress President to name their leader. This was announced by Union Minister Sushilkumar Shinde, who along with AICC treasurer Motilal Vora and incharge of state affairs Digvijay Singh, who had attended the meeting. The three senior Congress leaders talked to all the MLAs individually to elicit their views. All the legislators, including the CLP leader in the previous assembly Pramod Tewari, and UPCC president Rita Bahuguna Joshi, who has been elected to the new assembly, were present. Three legislators - Ajay Rai, Nawab Kazim Ali Khan and Nadeem Javed - were absent. There are 28 Congress MLAs in the 403-member state Assembly. All the legislators attended wanted Sonia Gandhi to take an appropriate decision and authorized her for the same.
