September 15, 2009, New Delhi: Pushing the austerity drive ahead in public life, Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi traveled to Ludhiyana in the Chair car of Shatabdi Express. He boarded the train this morning from the New Delhi Railway Station to travel the industrial city of Punjab.
Congress General Secretary refused to accept flowers presented to him at the station and said that it was the privilege of the executive class passengers. He demanded that he be served water in a plastic cup like other passengers.
Passengers traveling by the train were elated to know that the Congress General Secretary was traveling with them. “It is good that Rahul Gandhi is traveling with common people. He will get to see our problems first hand,” a passenger said.
Congress General Secretary is on his one day tour to Ludhiana to inaugurate a four day camp of Youth Congress. He will return to Delhi in the same class later in the evening.
A day earlier, Congress President Sonia Gandhi flew economy class from Delhi to Mumbai and set an example for others. Earlier Finance Minsiter Pranab Mukharjee traveled to Kolkata by economy class and many cabinet ministers announced that they will follow the suit.
