Latest news - Congress at Varanasi resolves to carry on struggle to rid the people from oppressive government

The UPCC is holding two day convention in Varanasi from today in the wake of urgent political, economic and social problems being faced by the people in the state. Although it is UPCC convention, it is being accorded national importance because of the important issues being taken up and discussed in this Convention.

Rahul Gandhi reached Varanasi today to inaugurate the Convention and declared open the Convention amidst loud cheers and clapping. Several union ministers, MPs, MLAs and leaders from different districts of the state are participating in the convention.

Rahul Gandhi said each Congress worker will have to struggle for the problems being faced by the people. “If we do not fight for people’s right, people will not support us”, he said unequivocally. “It is not a matter of election but for the future of UP which was once prosperous and leading state”, he exhorted the party workers. “We will ensure that the UP state develops and progresses in tune with development and progress taking place all over India”, he added. “We will not compromise with the future of UP,” the young MP from UP said further. The further said that during last 20 years the governments of state had failed to deliver the aspirations and expectations of the people.

Rahul Gandhi mentioned that UPA government at the Centre has initiated many progressive schemes for the benefit of the people. Under MGNREGA, NRHM and Janani Suraksha Yojana schemes huge funds were provided to the state government but those funds failed to reach the poor people for whom they were meant for. The Young leader also referred to the plight of the people of Bundelkhand who are suffering from severe draught and lack of development. BSP government talks of social justice but is not bothered about securing farmers fair rates for the wheat produced by them, he said.

The AICC General Secretary also spoke about farmers agitation in Bhatta parsaul in Greater Noida where violent clashes took place leading to death. He said when he visited the affected villages; there were no men, only women were there. The state government claims there is no problem in those villages and Maoist-like elements created problem in the villages. “If that is so, then why no judicial enquiry is being held to find out the truth”, Rahul Gandhi said. The Young leader assured that the Congress would continue to struggle for people’s cause.

The UP Congress presented 23 resolutions on several political, social and economic issues for discussion. These resolutions are combinations of burning problems being faced by the general public in the state and their viable solutions which can reverse the bad situation and restore the UP state to its past glory.

The Convention will continue tomorrow. Congress president Sonia Gandhi will address the valedictory function. The party convention would culminate in a public rally by Congress president Sonia Gandhi in Benia Bagh in the afternoon tomorrow in which AICC General Secretary Digvijay Singh besides other leaders will be present.
